A sharp pain in my tail shocked me awake; my bones felt on the verge of snapping. Driven by pain, confusion, and lightning-fast instinct, I sank my teeth through skin and muscle.

     “AIEEE!” somebody screeched.

Next thing I knew, I was soaring through the air, flipping head over tail until gravity slapped me into the brush. I thrashed around on my back. The violent motion finally snapped me right side up, with my belly to the ground. The unknown culprit who’d stepped on my tail and then kicked me into the forest was making a fuss nearby, shouting “Snaking Snake!” and stomping all over the clearing, pulverizing leaves and sticks under her heavy feet. That could’ve been me.

Danielle James has written and published over ten books since following her dream of writing in 2017. Tortured Whispers by Danielle James is a dark taboo love story. If you draw a hard line at strong themes, this book may not be for you, and that’s okay.

Brooklyn …

Drowning in plain sight while everyone can see you is terrifying.

But more than anything it’s lonely. And sometimes withstanding the weight of being alone is worse than anything.

The only thing that helped me cope was cutting.

Sinking a razor into my arm over and over pushed air into my lungs even though it hurt me in the long run. It was the only way I could breathe.

     Until I found him.

Recommended Reading: “The Yellow Crown” from Under Twin Suns: Alternate Histories of the Yellow Sign. In this excerpt of Gyzander’s story, Betty starts a new job at what appears on the outside to be a house of ill repute, but is something quite different:

Mr. Morgan listened, but got more and more distracted by the lovely Jessica at his side. At one point, however, he looked up and demanded, “What is this that we are listening to? It’s like nothing I’ve ever heard before.”

Madam turned the book so he could see the cover, then resumed reading until he interrupted her again.

“That’s The King in Yellow! Stop! Don’t you know it’s dangerous to read that? They say that if you read the second act it drives you mad.”

Jessica leaned in to nibble on his ear and Betty could just make out her soft words. “Darling, you have it all wrong. The second act is what will make our time together tonight even better than you could ever imagine.” He tilted his head toward her, half closing his eyes.

Betty pressed her hands together in front of her. She had heard of the play from one of the patrons when she worked at the coat check in the jazz lounge. But they had all laughed and dared each other to read it.

Madam resumed reading again in a soft voice. “Act Two …”
