HWA announces its next members-only anthology
HWA is proud to announce our next anthology:
New Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (final title still to be determined) will be an anthology of all-new stories in tribute to the classic Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series by Alvin Schwartz. The anthology will be edited by Jonathan Maberry, and published by HarperCollins in 2019.
We are looking for original stories told in the vein of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (and if you are not familiar with these books, we urge you to read one before submitting). We are NOT looking for literal re-tellings of any of the stories in those books, but stories that include classic horror elements and urban legends. Think stories that would be read aloud around a campfire at night to raise a few hairs!
These stories are intended for middle grade readers, so please – no sex and no extreme violence.
Please follow standard manuscript guidelines.
Word length: 500-1,500 words
Payment: 7 cents a word
PLEASE NOTE: There will be a short submission window on this! We will open to HWA members’ submissions on March 1st, and close at 11:59 p.m. on April 1st. The submission link will be mailed to members on February 28th. Submissions will be blind, so please follow instructions carefully when submitting, and good luck!
