Rocky Wood Memorial Scholarship Fund for Nonfiction Writing

rocky_woodThe Horror Writers Association (HWA), the premier organization of writers and publishers of horror and dark fantasy and home of the iconic Bram Stoker Awards®, today announced the launch of the Rocky Wood Memorial Scholarship Fund for Nonfiction Writing, an endowed fund providing grants for research and writing nonfiction relating to horror and dark fantasy literature. The Fund will provide grants annually to individuals who are members of the HWA. A member in good standing of any level of membership is eligible, regardless of previous writing experience or achievements.

member_perks214As previously announced Charles Day is stepping down as HWA’s Mentor Program Chair after three years to concentrate on his roles as Co-Chair of HWA’s New York/Long Island Chapter and as a Member of the Library Committee. HWA’s President Rocky Wood thanked Charles for his service, “Charles has done a superb job, increasing the number of members being mentored many fold to 35. The work needed to get more mentors and matching mentors and mentees is immense and largely unseen.” Members who wish to volunteer as a mentors should email president@horror.org.

Self-Published Works Accepted for Membership Qualification

hwa-logo214x164The HWA’s referendum on including self-published work in membership qualification for our Active and Affiliate levels closed on July 23. The referendum passed by a significant margin.

The changes apply from July 24, 2014. New ByLaws and Membership Qualifications have been issued.

Apply for membership here: https://horror.org/horrorstage/joining-the-hwa/ (To qualify for Active as a self published author you must have proven earnings of $2000 from a single work within two years of publication; for Affiliate the requirement is $200).

Brad C. Hodson, currently our part-time Administrator, will commence full-time in the role on August 1. In addition to working part time for the HWA for the past few years, Brad has worked for several years in various areas of project management for Technicolor. Working closely with clients such as Apple iTunes, Sony Pictures, Netflix, and Paramount Pictures, he has developed a key set of both administrative and interpersonal skills. We are writing to bring to your attention the fact that Amazon’s customer review policy does not go far enough to protect authors and publishers from bullying, harassment and inappropriate reviews. Currently, the Amazon policy protects authors and publishers from “profanity or spiteful remarks,”
though it’s not clear what would be considered “spiteful,” and this rule appears not …

Klein), Doug Murano, Angel Leigh McCoy, and JG Faherty, together with President Rocky Wood and Vice President Lisa Morton, have been putting the finishing touches on the HWA’s new Twitter goals, posting rules, and usage guidelines. In summary, they are as follows:

  • Jenn Mattern will be managing the Twitter accounts/feeds. Under her supervision, select officers and page coordinators will be able to forward information for posting on the HWA Twitter pages (@HorrorWriters and @StokerAwards) and also create direct and send direct tweets. These tweets will provide updates on the organization, industry news

The first Horror Writers Association Scholarship has been awarded to Jim Pyre, a pseudonym for a writer who grew up in Chicago but now lives in a small farming town.
