Celebrating Our Elders: Interview with Marge Simon

 

Marge Simon lives in Ocala, Florida, with her husband, poet/writer Bruce Boston. She has won multiple Bram Stoker Awards, Rhysling Awards, the Elgin, Dwarf Stars, and Strange Horizons Readers’ Awards. She received HWA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. Marge’s works have appeared in Asimov’s Science Fiction, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, New Myths, and Daily Science Fiction. Her stories also appear in anthologies such as the 2020 Bookfest Award-winning Under Her Skin, the Colorado Book Award-winning Shadow Atlas, and Sifting the Ashes, to name a few. She attends the ICFA annually

Congratulations to all the poets who were selected for the annual HWA Poetry Showcase IX, especially our featured poets Stephanie M. Wytovich, Geneve Flynn and Naomi Simone Borwein. It was difficult to choose just 50 poems when well over 200 poetry submissions came in this year. I’m grateful for fellow judges Lee Murray, Maxwell I. Gold and Frances Pai for helping me to read all of these and make the hard decisions.

Edited by Angela Yuriko Smith with judges Lee Murray, Maxwell I. Gold and Frances Lu Pai Ippolito, this year features Stephanie M. Halloween Haunts: The Last Night of October by Marge Simon

The last night of October

is one of crickets,

loud and soft, blending

with a yellow gray sky,

a chill wind rising,

 

while down the street

children in costume

parade from house to house.

But ours is dark.

 

A door slams.

My wife’s thin face,

distorted with hate,

breath stinking of gin,

that shy pretty girl

I took to the altar

so many years ago,

out she goes to the car.

 

(about the brakes –

I’d fixed them just for her)

 

She revs it up, and charges

into the rush …

Hi, folks! Marge Simon here. I’m your current Chair of the Board of Trustees, and I have edited a column on Dark Poetry for the HWA NL since the late 90’s. My interest in HWA started when I began attending the World Horror Cons. I loved the folks I met and was thrilled with the panels, the guests of honor, and the displaying artists’ works.
