Interview with Winner of the Rocky Wood Scholarship 2018

Winner of the HWA’s ROCKY WOOD SCHOLARSHIP in 2018, Joe Maddrey has recently released the fruit of those labors with the release of Adapting Stephen King Volume I: Carrie, ‘Salem’s Lot and The Shining from Novel to Screenplay from McFarland press.

  • What inspired you to tackle such an interesting topic?

Scholarship Announcement 2021

The Horror Writers Association (HWA) offers a variety of scholarships and grants to assist writers looking to pursue a career as a writer of horror fiction, nonfiction, or poetry. We also have an endowment program for libraries looking to expand their young adult reading programs. This year, the HWA awarded 14 scholarships/grants/endowments, with a total value of $10,500 (USD).

2020 HWA Diversity Grant Recipients

The Horror Writers Association (HWA) is pleased to announce the following recipients of the 2020 HWA Diversity Grants:

Jacqueline Dyre (they/them) is the editor and publisher of Novel Noctule. You can find them in the sunshine state, drinking poorly-made coffee and consuming psychological horror in lieu of meals.

Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki (he/him) is a Nigerian speculative fiction writer, slush reader and editor. He has been awarded an honourable mention in the L Ron Hubbard’s Writers of the Future Contest, twice, and won the Nommo award for best short story by an African with his short story “The Witching Hour.”

Matthew Andrew is a retired U.S. Marine who served multiple tours in support of combat operations in Afghanistan and the Balkans. He currently works in the finance sector in Dallas, Texas. His short fiction can be found in Pantheon Magazine, Blight Digest, PMMP‘s Lost Signals anthology, and Thuglit, among others.


MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT SHELLEY SCHOLARSHIP

Abril Altamirano is a cultural journalist and horror writer from Quito, Ecuador. Her work has been published in Ecuadorian printed media such as Diario La Hora, Casapalabras, and MundoDiners

Mary Rajotte has a penchant for penning nightmarish tales. She has been published in Shroud Magazine, and in works from Library of Horror Press, Shroud Publishing, and the Great Lakes Horror Company. Congratulations to the winner of The Scholarship From Hell! First place winner Billicent James San Juan will receive domestic coach airfare (contiguous 48 states) to and from Long Beach, a four-night stay on the Queen Mary, free registration to StokerCon2017 and as many Horror University workshops as she’d like to attend.

Second runner up Lisa Blair Kroger will receive a convention membership generously donated by Tim Waggoner, registration to Tim’s Horror University class and one more Horror University class of her choice.

The Horror Writers Association announces the 2017 Horror University Scholarship. The Scholarship from Hell is offered by the HWA and puts the recipient through an intensive, hands-on workshop offered through Horror University.  

This year’s Horror University will take place during StokerCon2017 aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA, from April 27-30. The winner of the Scholarship from Hell will receive domestic coach airfare (contiguous 48 states) to and from Long Beach, a four-night stay on the Queen
