With a cinematic legacy that traces back to the silent film era, the horror-comedy hybrid is a cornerstone of American filmmaking and yet, it is a particularly difficult sub-genre to pin down. By representing what Nol Carroll referred to as opposite sides of the same coin, horror and humor tap into similar aspects of cultural dread in order to create in audiences the specific physiological experiences of fear and laughter, respectively. Horror-comedy films speak to our emotional connection to film and yet, there is limited critical analysis devoted to this sub-genre. This edited collection is our answer to that oversight.

We envision this book to be a serious look at the ways in which horror-comedy films function to create a unique viewing experience for the audience as well as how the sub-genre broadens traditional notions of horror and dread. Emerging and advanced scholars are invited to submit chapters exploring broadly the sub-genre, as well as in-depth examinations of particular films. We are especially interested in having the following films represented within the collection:

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
The Comedy of Terrors (1964)
Spider Baby (1968)
Young Frankenstein (1974)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1978)
Student Bodies (1981)
Saturday the 14th (1981)
Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
Elvira: Mistress of Dark (1988)
Leprechaun (1993)
Serial Mom (1994)
Psycho Beach Party (2000)
Scary Movie (2000)
Tucker & Dale vs Evil (2010)
Cabin in the Woods (2012)
