THE LOVECRAFT ANNUAL: Guidelines

The Lovecraft Annual is looking for cutting-edge scholarship on H. P. Lovecraft (1890–1937). The journal is published annually by Hippocampus Press; each issue usually appears in August. Articles can range from 2000 to 10,000 words in length (longer articles have occasionally been accepted, but potential contributors of such articles should confer with the editor about them in advance of submission). Articles can cover a wide range: studies of individual works by Lovecraft; new information about facets of Lovecraft’s life and career; broader discussions of Lovecraft’s place in literary, social, political, and cultural history; literary or other influences upon Lovecraft’s work as well as Lovecraft’s influence upon later work in literature, film, media, and popular culture; etc. Articles on Lovecraft’s friends and colleagues might be considered, but only if the focus of the article is primarily on Lovecraft himself. There is no need to write in an “academic” manner, with heavy use of technical jargon; we are looking instead for articles that are readable and accessible, while also breaking new ground in the field.

Articles can be submitted at any time throughout the year, but the deadline for submission of articles is June 1 if the contributor wishes the article to appear in that year’s issue. The Lovecraft Annual also publishes a small number of book reviews of recent publications relevant to Lovecraft; generally these reviews are assigned by the editor, but contributors are welcome to suggest books for review to the editor.
