Rena Mason, Bram Stoker Awards® Committee Co-Chair
The Bram Stoker Awards® are given annually for “superior achievement” and not for “best of the year,” and the rules are deliberately designed to make ties possible.
Any work of horror first published in the English language may be considered for an award during the year of its publication. The categories for Bram Stoker Awards are: Novel, First Novel, Short Fiction, Long Fiction, Young Adult, Fiction Collection, Poetry Collection, Anthology, Screenplay, Graphic Novel, and Nonfiction.
There are two paths to a work becoming a Nominee for the Bram Stoker Award. One path is through Jury Submissions of works. You must be the author/editor/publisher of the work, to Submit the work. You do not have to be an HWA dues-paying member to Submit a work.
Submissions are still open to works published/that will be published between December 1, 2017 through December 31, 2017. The Submissions window for these works will close on December 31, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. PST.
(If the work was published between January 1, 2017 through November 30, 2017, the Submissions window closed at 11:59 p.m. PST on November 30, 2017.)
Please write email@example.com if you have any questions regarding your Recommendations or for adding a link to your work (only IF it appears on the HWA Bram Stoker Award 2017 Reading List). http://www.horror.org/awards/2017readinglist.php
Please write firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions regarding your work’s eligibility for the awards.
The other way to get onto the Bram Stoker Awards Preliminary Ballot is through the HWA membership at large, who Recommends/Makes Recommendations of worthy works for consideration in the same categories as the Juries: Anthology, Fiction Collection, First Novel, Graphic Novel, Long Fiction (Novella), Nonfiction, Novel, Poetry, Short Fiction, Screenplay, and Young Adult Novel. The works with the top five highest number of Recommendations (also ties), move on to the Preliminary Ballot, to be announced on January 20, 2018.
The window to make Recommendations closes on January 15, 2018 (11:59 p.m. PST). You may not Recommend your own work, or works that you are the editor/publisher of.
Now that the Recommendations numbers are no longer posted alongside the works, please don’t feel that you shouldn’t Recommend a work that is a favorite of yours because you think it’s popular and will likely make it onto the ballot either by Recommendations numbers or by the Jury. All you have to do as a member is login after clicking the “Members Only” tab at http://www.horror.org, then click on “Bram Stoker Awards” in the lefthand menu, and then click on the big red button that says “Make A Recommendation” and fill out the form.
Please write email@example.com if you need membership/password assistance.
All dues-paying HWA members at ANY LEVEL of membership can Recommend as many works as they’d like in different categories.
If you don’t remember what you’ve Recommended so far this year, please write firstname.lastname@example.org and ask before making a double Recommendation for a work. Recommending the same work twice makes the Compiler’s job more difficult. Thank you.
