On December 9, 2017, the Los Angeles Chapter of the HWA had its final meeting of the year, and continued its yearly tradition of having a spirited White Elephant gift exchange.
With over 30 members in attendance, the group still managed to cover some of the huge accomplishments we’ve had this year, both as a large organization and at a chapter level. We discussed the importance of members filling out their ACA surveys when they renew, the upcoming LA Times Festival of Books event, Kate Jonez‘ Novel Writing Camp in January, and—with four people coming for the first time—we gave out some new-member packets. Eric J. Guignard provided his usual excellent, curated markets. These are always a hit; so many members have mentioned getting their first pro sales through these links, and tonight was no exception.
Also, we had a Round Robin where everyone shared what they were up to; this was limited to a minute a person so we’d have time for the White Elephant gift exchange. The exchange was a blast, with gifts ranging from a very small, demonic rubber duck to lots of wine bottles, a few Krampus ornaments, and even a large light-up tree (the centerpiece at Joanna Parapynskiâ‘s wedding)! Every year, we have a Magic Gnome, said to give good luck to the keeper for the year they have it. This year? The Magic Gnome was won by Taylor Grant. Overall? A phenomenal evening. See everyone in January!
