THE HWA BOOKSELLER OF THE YEAR AWARD is our public recognition of the fact that without booksellers and bookstores, horror writers could not exist. Sure, people could write horror as a hobby for their own pleasure and the pleasure of friends and relatives. But without the dedicated bookstore owners and managers who make our work available to the reading public, horror writing could not be a profession.

About the Award

• WHO MAY RECEIVE THE AWARD? The award is presented annually to a bookstore owner, manager, or employee who has energetically and imaginatively promoted the sale of horror and dark fiction books in his or her store. Stores may take any form. It doesn't matter whether the candidate's store is virtual, mail-order, or brick-and-mortar. Candidates must have been actively engaged in bookselling during the year prior to the award's presentation.


• HOW ARE RECIPIENTS CHOSEN? At the beginning of each year, HWA's President appoints a Bookseller Award Committee. As the year progresses, HWA members and members of the general reading public recommend candidates to the award committee. At the end of the year, the committee, in turn, evaluates the recommendations and makes a final selection.


• WHEN IS THE AWARD PRESENTED? The winner is announced and honored at the Bram Stoker Awards banquet, held during our Annual Conference each spring.


• HOW CAN YOU RECOMMEND A CANDIDATE? It's very simple. If you know a bookstore owner or manager who has energetically and imaginatively promoted the sale of horror and dark fiction books in his or her store during the past year, just click here to fill out the online recommendation form. Anyone may make a recommendation. Please do not make more than one recommendation for the same candidate. The number of recommendations a candidate receives is less important to the committee than the candidate's accomplishments. Candidates may not recommend themselves.

Past Recipients

The first HWA Bookseller of the Year Award will be given for bookselling done during the calendar year 2003. For the name of the first winner, check this page in spring, 2004.
