Getting Dark Whispers Content Automatically

All of the content on this blog is available as an RSS feed.  RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” — it’s a format for distributing and gathering content from sources across the Web, including newspapers, magazines, and blogs.  By using an RSS feed and feed reader, you can have all of the latest content added to this blog sent to you automatically.  This way you can stay up to date without having to constantly revisit the site to see if there is anything new.

In order to use an RSS feed, you first need a feed reader.  These are available as part of common browsers (such as Firefox or Internet Explorer), stand-alone applications (such as Outlook or Thunderbird) or as an online web-based application.  A typical interface for a feed reader will display your feeds and the number of new (unread) entries within each of those feeds. You can also organize your feeds into categories and even clip and save your favorite entries (with certain applications).

If you prefer, you can use an online, web-based service to track and manage feeds. I prefer this method because it gives me the advantage of being able to access my feed updates anywhere I can find a web browser. Also, upgrades and new features are added automatically.

Feed Reader Options

The feed reader I use is called Bloglines and it’s available at www.bloglines.com.  Account set up is easy and free.  I also love the fact that Bloglines lets me “clip” articles I want to save to a separate Clippings folder for later use.

If you’d like to use the Firefox browser as your feedreader, an excellent explanation on how to do this is available at http://johnbokma.com/firefox/rss-and-live-bookmarks.html.

If you’d like to use the Internet Explorer browser as your feedreader, check out Microsoft’s IE7 tour – http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/tour/fre/rss/

There are literally hundreds of other readers to choose from and you can find the one that best suits your needs by doing a quick search on the subject.

I Have a Feed Reader – Now What?

If you use IE7 or Firefox, your browser will display an orange icon with a dot and two curved lines whenever a page you visit has a feed available.  Clicking on that icon will add the Dark Whispers blog to your subscription list as a Live Bookmark.  Now all you have to do is go to the link in your Favorites list to view the latest news and information.

Another way to subscribe to the Dark Whispers blog is to click on the image in the left hand toolbar on our main page that says RSS Feed.  This will take you to another page that has icons for many of the common feedreaders.  Find yours and click on it.  That’s it – you’re all set!
